From 1996-up H-D has used transmission mounted speedo sensors to drive the speedometer. Therefore stock sensors should work with stock-like speedometers. The combination of a stock sensor with a custom speedo may give issues like non or incorrect working or trouble code triggering in later models since the pulse runs through the stock ECU. This is a trial and error route, the outcome may even be different on identical bikes. If all fails it is, in all cases, possible to use a Reed or Hall effect magnetic sensor that is installed on wheel, sprocket, pulley or such. These rely on wheel rotation to give, after correct speedometer calibration, a reliable speed indication and will work with all stock or custom electronic speedometers.
